A senior Al-Shabaab operative has surrendered to Somali government forces in the Galgadud region on Tuesday morning.
Ali Ibrahim surrendered to Somalia’s elite Gorgor unit in Dhusamareb.
He is said to be from the Elbur district in Galgadud, one of the strongholds of Al-Shabaab in Central Somalia.
The commander of the Somali government forces in the Galgadud region said that Ibrahim had been working as head of the militant extremist group’s medical office in Galgadud.
The self-confessed log-time member of Al-Shabaab admitted to having taken part in many battles in Galmudug.
For several weeks, federal and regional forces have been battling Al-Shabaab militants in Galmudug, specifically in the southern Mudug region.
On Sunday, Puntland donated military equipment and vehicles to the Galmudug administration – including water tankers and ambulances – to assist in the battle against Al-Shabaab.
