Organizational Settings and reporting Relationships:
The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) is seeking the services of a qualified consultant to assess the suitability of using modified sea containers as long term living accommodation facilities for its staff in Somalia. The Consultant is required to assess Environmental and Health Conditions of UN Containerized Living Accommodation in Mogadishu, Somalia.
The containers are modified 20 ft sea containers equipped with AC units, in built toilet and bathroom facilities, and are located within the secure area of the Mogadishu International Airport.
The consultant will be based in Mogadishu and report to the Director of UNSOS.
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment and identify any potential health risks, such as air quality and flow, contaminants, relative humidity and light conditions.
- Propose any tests that will be indicative of the health standards of the living accommodation facilities in accordance with international standards.
- Perform the assessment in varying conditions (e.g. AC switched on/off), reflecting as closely as possible the normal occupancy usage of the container (e.g. 8-hour sleeping, 10-minute shower etc.)
- Define the base line requirement to enable normal and healthy living conditions, following guideline standard indicators
The consultant is expected to provide a report on the suitability of the containers for long-term accommodation and living purposes. The report should provide where necessary, actionable and practical recommendations that will address identified shortcomings to bring the containers to acceptable international standards for accommodation facilities.
Advance University degree equivalent certification in a related field: (e.g. Public Health official, Environmental Engineering/Science, etc.)
Five years of work experience in health assessment of accommodation facilities; any previous experience in the certification of modified sea containers or similar facilities for living purpose is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official languages is an advantage.
Assessment: Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise that may be followed by competency-based interview.
