AMISOM troops advanced in and around the southern port city of Marka on Monday, in what appears to be an attempt to lay siege to militants-held town, reports said.

AMISOM soldiers from different corners are being deployed near the town, to prepare for an offensive to dislodge Al Shabaab fighters from the coastal city, according to the sources.

Marka, is a seaside town located around 100Km south of Mogadishu, Somali capital. The city has been changing in hands between Al Shabaab and AU troops (AMISOM) since 2012.

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity told Radio Shabelle over the phone that they are currently in fear of possible battle between the militants and squeezing forces.

Al Shabaab fighters have retaken Marka last week after Somali government troops have pulled out of the town over unpaid salaries, according to the local villager.
